Bridge over the Grand Union Canal

I went out at lunch to try out my new tripod (Manfrotto Pro 055XPROB) - I threaded it through the loop on the top of my rucksack and set off on my mountain bike down the canal near where I live. The thing kept hitting me in the back of the head when I went over roots and stuff, but it’s worth the pain because it’s so much more adjustable than my old cheapo tripod.

I took a few pictures around this bridge - I’m not 100% happy with any of them, but this is the best of the bunch I think. The clouds are a touch indistinct for my liking, but I like the curvy shapes that abound. I’ll return to the area again to try and get some better pictures.

I’m experimenting with taking more shots for my HDRs at the moment - I’ve found that if I adjust the camera so that the wheel moves in half stop increments, I can get a 9 shot HDR pretty quickly, by setting the AEB to -2,0,+2, and sliding the wheel by 12 stops between batches of 3 images. It’s looking OK I think, but I probably have to choose my battles a little better.

Technical info: ISO 100, f/22, tripod, 9-shot HDR combined in photomatix pro.

A Lonely Tree

I took this a few weeks ago when walking around Loughborough.  Normally we go somewhere more interesting, as the landscape around here is a little flat and dull… but it was a nice day and sometimes it’s nice to reacquaint yourself.

Saw this tree sitting on its own on a hill, and knew it was worth a shot. Fired off a few bracketed shots, trying to find an interesting foreground, and initially thought I’d failed… but later I came back to this shot and realised it had potential.

I think the colours have worked out really well on this one, and I like the nice clean composition.

Some vaguely technical info: HDR, 3 bracketed images (AEB), iso 100, f/11, canon 450d, handheld, combined in photomatix pro.
