I’m going to create a detailed page about each of my lenses. I’ve started with my favourite:
I’ll create a page like that for the rest of my lenses - but in the meantime, here’s the original “lenses” page:
Ah - lenses.
They really are my downfall.
Within days of getting my 350d, I knew I had to buy some. I went for the kit lens (18-55mm canon thing). It was serviceable, but I knew I wanted better.
My first purchase was a canon 50mm 1.8. These are cheap as chips, and GREAT. The low depth of field means you can take pictures in very low light, to get warm lighting rather than a harsh flash effect. Sadly, I broke it in Paris earlier this year!

The next thing I wanted was a zoom lens - I guess that’s the first thing that crosses most people’s minds when they think of lenses. I got the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 AGP DG Macro. I had looked at canon lenses but they were just too much money.

The zoom lens is great - I still use it. But I did find that once I had it, it wasn’t really what I would use most often - what I really wanted was a wide angle, as I love landscapes. So - sigma again. The 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC. It’s a *GREAT* lens. I’ve had lots of fun with this. When I go out I normally take this along.

Then I had to get a macro lens. I went for the Sigma 70mm 1:2.8 DG Macro. Now - this IS a great macro lens - but I am a little annoyed by how close you have to get to things. It makes taking pictures of insects a bit tricky - but it can do lovely things:

After that, I realised what I really needed was a “street zoom”. An equivalent of the 18-55 I got with the camera in the first place, but higher quality. I went for the sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 macro DC. It’s an excellent everyday lens, and tends to be on my camera more than anything else.

In June this year, in Paris, I dropped the beloved canon 50mm - as is my way, I consoled myself with a 30mm sigma f/1.4. Which is a SPLENDID lens. I’ve not had much chance to use it yet, but here’s an illustration of the low depth of field and pleasant lighting:

That’s it for now - thank god. I don’t think my wallet can take any more.
