The Lake District - a Photography Paradise
I love the Lake District - a unique landscape of beautiful lakes and rugged mountains. I could spend a lifetime taking photos around Derwent Water alone.
The scenery is incredibly varied, offering limitless possibilities to any photographer lucky enough to spend time there. I’ve taken thousands of photos in Derbyshire and Yorkshire, which are closer to my home (in the Midlands) - but the place I’m always champing at the bit to get back to is the Lake District. There’s no other landscape quite like it.
Check back regularly, or subscribe to the RSS feed - as time goes by I’ll be adding many more Lake District photos.

Another one from my afternoon out near Coalville with Andy. I had been playing with my old polariser for my sigma 10-20, but got bored and brought out my sigma 70-300, and took a couple of snaps of the distant skyline, not really thinking it would amount to much. I really like the effect here - I can’t help but think of parallax scrolling from old arcade games, which shows me up for bespectacled poindexter I am.

On the one hand, this image is sickmakingly saccharine, but on the other… the colours are nice and I like the odd composition. It’s me and Ali, at the top of Helvellyn (the third highest mountain in England) this February.
We had to climb along Striding Edge to get there:

Which for a man who doesn’t like sheer drops, was a somewhat eye opening experience. I was crawling across it like Gollum, whilst Ali virtually skipped along. We then had to contend with a 45 degree (or more - bloody steep anyway) slope covered in snow with a cliff behind us to get up to the very top. It’s a miracle I didn’t just crouch down and start rocking to and fro like a mentalist.
Summit pic: iso 400, f/17, 1/1000s, handheld.
Striding Edge: iso 400, f/17, handheld 3 short HDR processed with photomatix pro.

Derwent Water is my favourite lake - cycling around it in February was glorious. The weather was extremely kind to us - it felt more like June. This is half way down the western side of the lake, looking back up towards Keswick, in the quiet woodland that fringes the lake.
Some technical info: iso 400, f/22, hand held, 1/125s exposure.

The lake district is my favourite place in the world - stunning scenery, and just the right scale for a determined human to be able to conquer even the highest peaks in a day. I try and go there once a year - this year we had a week of non stop sunshine (well, apart from at night) in february. Was exceedingly strange - snow on top of some of the mountains, but we were in T shirts.
This is taken from the summit of bow fell, looking southwest towards cockley beck and seathwaite, and beyond that, the sea.
Some vaguely technical info: iso 100, f/11, hand held. 3 shot HDR processed in photomatix pro.
